Your Husband and Home Repair Projects

Many women want their homes to be beautiful with clean, organized kitchens and art decorating the brightly colored walls. Many of these women are also married to men who think they can update the appliances in the kitchen and paint all of the walls themselves. Sometimes you have to teach your husband about drawing the line between hiring a professional and do-it-yourself home repair.

How many times have you heard your husband say he can fix the toilet when it starts to run or the sink when it starts to leak? You tell him before he even walks into the bathroom with his toolset that you think you should call a professional. Chances are he spends hours in the bathroom taking apart the toilet or the sink and talking to you about what the problem is (or the what he thinks the problem might be). Then he gets up in the middle of the project and realizes that he can’t fix the problem – and now your bathroom has been torn apart and you have wasted valuable time that could have been spent with a professional fixing the problem.

There are some men who just don’t know how to use tools and fix things around the house, and there are some men who know exactly what they are doing with that toolset and can fix a leaking sink easily. Just because your husband is one of those men who doesn’t know what he’s doing with a toolset doesn’t mean you have to try to convince him not to help you out with home repair projects around the house.

There are plenty of projects your husband can do in the house that are easy and affordable. You can fix up the house while also making him feel better about not being able to fix the loo seats or sinks! Painting is a project that can often be done by an untrained professional such as your husband. You can go to the store together and pick out the bright colors you want to decorate your house with, have someone at the store mix the colors and measure how much paint you need, purchase the necessary supplies from the store (such as rollers and tarps for your floor) and then have your husband come home and paint the walls with you.

While there are many projects you can do easily together at home, you also have to know when you should draw the line between hiring a pro and DIY home repair! You don’t want to get half way through a project and suddenly realize that you don’t actually know how to tile a roof. Then you are stuck with an unfinished project and will have to wait until a professional is available to come finish it for you. It could also end up costing you more money to have the pro undo some of the untrained work you did on the house and DIY home repair projects are supposed to be more affordable that hiring a company or professional to come over and get paid to do the work for you.
