Why Plumbing is a Good Career
by Valerie Muscat on Sep 19, 2021
Think back to when you were a kid. How many times were you asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Probably quite a bit. In our society, your career path is a common way to self-identify and find purpose. But, it’s not easy to find a career that works for you. Many people spend years or even decades searching for the perfect job.
If you’ve ever needed to call a plumber for a common drain cleaning and thought, “I could probably just learn how to do this myself”, you’d be right. In fact, you could get paid to do it. If you’re looking to find your career path or start a new one, plumbing is a great option. In this article, we take a look at what makes plumbing a good career.
Earn Lots of Money!
Let’s not beat around the bush; you want a career that pays well. Fortunately, plumbing is generally a lucrative career. People will always need the service of good plumbers, and they will always be willing to pay for it, making plumbing contractors one of the highest paid contractors out there. It’s hard to imagine that plumbers will be struggling anytime soon.
The average licensed plumber salary in Canada is $73,125 per year or $37.50 per hour. Entry level positions start at $66,300 per year, while most experienced workers make up to $98,800 per year. Who knew that drain cleaning could earn you so much cash?
Less Student Debt
There’s a student loan crisis going on, and you don’t want to get caught up in it. It’s becoming increasingly common for students to enroll in an expensive four-year university program, graduate with tens of thousands of dollars in debt, and struggle even to find lucrative employment in their field of study.
The biggest advantage of going to a school for a trade like plumbing is that it costs way less upfront in tuition costs, and you’re much more likely to get a job right out of school. Many schools will help you find an apprenticeship either during school or right after graduation, so worrying about finding work isn’t nearly as big of a headache as it is for graduating university students. Spend less on school and make money faster. It doesn’t take a university graduate to understand that dynamic!
Independence
The luxury of independence is what many people look for in a career. Why would you want to be under the thumb of an employer when you can have complete control over your work? You’ll need to work as an apprentice to build up experience, but once you get your feet wet for a little while and get enough experience, you can always own your own plumbing business. No more begging your boss for time off for a family emergency or fighting with coworkers for the best holiday days off.
Job Satisfaction
One of the best parts about being a plumber is you actually get the opportunity to truly help people in need. When someone’s only toilet gets clogged or a pipe bursts in their kitchen, their life gets turned upside down quickly. Seeing the relief on the faces of grateful customers can sometimes feel like payment enough, even though you’ll be making money too.
Emergency plumbing isn’t the only satisfying part of the job, though. Even basic plumbing like drain cleaning or fixing a leaky faucet is important to bring clean running water to those who need it. Water is the basis for human life, after all.
If you’re thinking about a career in plumbing, good for you. Not only can you make a good, reliable living, but you would also be serving a crucial service for society.
