Convection Microwave Ovens and How They Work

by Guest Post on Mar 29, 2011

The convection microwave may be something you have never heard of, but they have been around for a while. With the popularity of convection ovens on cooking shows and the need for quick methods of cooking, it was inevitable that someone would come out with a combination of an oven or a convection microwave.

The convection microwave uses convection to bake, brown, crisp, and broil foods. It also uses the normal radio waves of microwaves to heat food from the inside. For the person who simply needs to re-heat or warm food, a conventional microwave is sufficient, but if you also want to cook creatively and quickly, the convection microwave is the appliance for you.

A heating element in the convection microwave is used to heat the air, and a fan turns to force the air to circulate throughout the chamber of the convection microwave. The hot air quickly moves around the food and eliminates the cool layer of insulating air that usually surrounds food in a regular oven. This hot air browns or crisps food and provides for even cooking. When using the convection microwave for reheating or warming food, the circulating air creates more even heat, thus eliminating problems with cold or hot spots in food.

Many convection microwave models offer three different settings. Microwave only, convection only, and combination cooking seem to be standard features on a convection microwave. This provides a person with greater versatility as they plan out their menus and cooking needs.

Because the convection microwave uses circulating air to cook foods, the temperatures necessary to cook foods can be lower than those needed for conventional cooking. Using lower temperatures with a convection microwave means that you are using less energy. The convection microwave shortens the time it takes to cook foods, and that is another energy savings.

For people who live in small apartments or whose homes have small kitchens, it is not feasible to have lots of different appliances. Purchasing a convection microwave makes sense in this case because it allows one to have all the convenience of the microwave plus the advantage of taking a minimum of space for regular cooking and baking. A person in this situation would be able to grill or roast meat, bake cakes and cookies, and cook pizza with a crisp crust. As you can see, a convection microwave saves space and time, which both translate into money.

When you are out looking for the perfect convection microwave, it might be a good idea to speak with a sales associate about the features that are available. You may need additional assistance determining the best size and style of convection microwave to purchase. Your sales associate will be able to help you with all of your needs as you provide information on where it will need to go and the types of foods you plan to cook in it. By doing a little homework and understanding both your needs and how a convection microwave works, you will be able to make a great choice and purchase the energy and time-saving unit that works best for you.
