3 Types of Renewable Energy for Your Home
by Michele Duchet on Nov 8, 2013
Renewable energy consists of energy sources that do not have a finite supply. The energy that is created by the sun, wind, or running water can be used in perpetuity, unlike resources such as natural gas and oil which will eventually run dry. Renewable energy has several benefits over traditional energy resources.
These energy sources help the environment, allow you to save money on your monthly utility budget, and create a more sustainable living environment. Here are three types of renewable energy that can keep your home running smoothly while having a limited impact on the environment.
Solar
Solar panels on your home, or the plant that supplies your energy, harness energy from the sun during the daylight hours. The panels then use that stored power to supply electricity to your home. You can install solar panels on your roof and nearly eliminate the need for any traditional power source. However, these panels are expensive to install and may not be feasible on all residential roofing styles. If you can’t have a personal solar panel and solar energy is still important to you, find an energy comparison site and compare Texas electricity rates, for example, where the providers use solar energy.
Wind
Wind turbines can also generate a lot of electricity for residential areas. While you can’t install a private wind turbine in your back yard, in certain parts of the country turbines are used to create a lot of the electricity for people from miles around. Many wind turbines are set up in desert climates, but they can also exist in open fields where there is a lot of available space. Turbines are essentially giant fans, and when they spin around the energy that is generated is captured and passed along to residential and commercial properties.
Water Power
Another way to gather energy from a natural resource is to create hydropower, which is gathered from the energy of running water. When the running water runs over a manmade course, a propeller spins and creates energy that powers a generator. This generator then creates electricity that is sent to homes. Similar to wind energy, you can’t harness water energy easily for your single home. You can, however, look for a local provider who makes use of water power. Water is gathered in a reserve for use in hydropower as it rains, and gravity is used to help the water flow more quickly to move the propellers.
Renewable energy is an eco-friendly option in many parts of the country. If you want to limit your negative impact on the environment, getting electricity from a source that harnesses natural resources is undoubtedly the way to go. Whether it’s solar, wind, or water energy – any time you can make use of an energy source that doesn’t require the use of synthetic chemicals or even coal, you are lowering the level of pollution that is exerted. Natural resources are also more sustainable – we’ll never run out of wind power like oil will.
