Remodel to Breathe New Life into Old Kitchens
by Sally Smith on Mar 12, 2014
The activity in most homes centers on the kitchen. It is where families come together to prepare and enjoy meals on a daily basis. It is probably the most important room in the home and can become outdated very quickly. Remodeling and upgrading a kitchen can turn a badly organized kitchen design into a more efficient modern one. Some advance planning and a little creativity can transform any kitchen into an updated one that can add instant value to the home. There are many ways to add convenience, efficiency, character and charm to a kitchen, without having to perform a major structural remodel. There are easy, inexpensive ways to make subtle changes that give a kitchen a new look and a renewed life.
Before beginning a kitchen remodel, it is important to have a plan and goal in mind. It is best to explore all ideas and themes before deciding on one. Concentrate on matching new décor designs with some existing items to save money. Renovating kitchen cabinets is as easy as changing paint color. Drab, dark cabinets take on new life and brighten the entire kitchen when they are painted a lighter color such as white or pale yellow. Changing out the cabinet hardware is a simple, inexpensive way to change the entire appearance of doors and drawers. Instead of plain handles and pulls, choose an unusual shape or design. Horseshoes or ropes make attractive pulls when using a Western theme.

New technology has helped create a new generation of kitchen benchtops that offer more durability and beauty to any kitchen. Laminate benchtops have been in existence for a long time and offer a high-quality surface in the latest fashion colors and designs. These laminate benchtops offer several options including customized edge profiles that match or complement any kitchen décor. There are endless possibilities when using kitchen benchtops to coordinate with existing kitchen items.
Cabinet backsplashes have changed in recent years and are now available in a variety of different materials that enhance any kitchen décor. Glass has become popular because of the extra dimension it adds to cabinets. Colorful, durable and easy to clean ceramic tile makes a beautiful and practical backsplash that improves the overall look of the kitchen.
If remodeling plans include replacing flooring, there are several options from which to choose. Ceramic tile in neutral colors is a good choice because it is easy to keep clean, less expensive than marble or granite and coordinates well with the rest of the kitchen décor. Kitchen flooring should be safe, easy to clean and attractive. Retro-style flooring with its bright colors and patterns is becoming popular with a retro-themed kitchen.
Creating a dream kitchen is as simple as refreshing and modernizing the kitchen design to suit a person's taste, lifestyle and current needs. The possibilities for adding new life to old kitchens are endless. It only takes a little imagination and ingenuity to design and implement a kitchen remodel that can be done, even on a limited budget.
