by Darren Smith on Feb 9, 2020
Lots of people are looking to save money for do-it-yourself projects. Many of these homeowners are wondering if they have the ability and knowledge to take on a home project. Many of the reasons they choose to do this is due to not wanting to invest the financial resources into paying professional painters to come to their home and paint their exterior.
The costs can vary from $3000-$10000 depending on the home and the exterior. For a complete repaint of an exterior brick home, the cost can be well above $10,000. Due to this, many homeowners are left asking the question of whether or not they can do this project on their own. If you are asking this question, then this article hopes to be able to help you make that decision.
When thinking about painting your home, it is important to think through your skill level of being able to accomplish either simple do-it-yourself home projects or difficult ones. When approaching painting your exterior, then you need to know that this is going to be on the difficult side. Several things will make this task difficult.
Having the right knowledge- It is important to ask the question of whether or not you understand what needs to take place when you begin the painting process. Are you familiar with all of the ends and outs of painting an exterior? Do you understand the painting process? Do you understand what needs to happen before putting on the paint? Do you understand how to take the paint off your home? There are lots of questions that need to be answered before you jump into this project. Here are a few areas that you will need to know before taking on such a big project.
Painting Preparation - Preparing your home to be painted is such a huge task. The importance of this step is so that you understand and know how to prepare your surface so that you know that your paint will stick for years to come. The worst thing to do at this moment is to not think through this process. Apply your paint right away. Then, one year from now, you can find that your paint is not sticking to your home. Thus, you have wasted a ton of money on paint and a lot of time painting your home. This is why understanding the painting preparation process is so important. You need to understand what needs to happen to the surface prior to painting. There are lots of YouTube videos that can help you with thinking through the painting preparation process.
Having the right tools - What makes this so important is that you probably don’t have the tools that you are going to need to take on this project. This means either you are going to need to rent tools or buy them. It is helpful at this moment to start thinking through your budget and what you are wanting to spend on painting your home. The cost of painting your home will include the painting materials plus the paint. Some of the tools you are going to need: a power washer, scraping tools, wire brushes, paintbrushes, cloth to protect bushes, and rollers, ladders. These are just a few of the tools that you will need. If you don’t have these, then you can locate a home store near you to ask about renting some of these tools or you might have to bite the bullet and go ahead and purchase these materials.
Having the right help - This is a tremendously hard job and it can require a lot of personpower to paint the exterior of your home. Something to ask as you are thinking about painting your home is whether or not you have enough help to accomplish this task. A part of that question has to do with how fast you would like to finish. Obviously, having more people is going to help the process go faster. However, it is important to know that you can’t just have anyone coming to help you paint. Painting is somewhat of an art form and it is important to have people who have some experience with a brush or roller. Make sure you ask the question to the people who will be helping you whether or not they have experience with painting.
Hopefully, this article has been helpful for you as you think about your upcoming exterior painting project. You can use this article to think through whether or not you would like to hire a professional painter. If you find yourself having little knowledge or lacking the right tools or help, then it may be best to go in the direction of hiring a painting company.
