When to Consider Hiring a Heating and Cooling Company
by Valerie Muscat on Mar 1, 2021
The weather isn’t something you can control, and whenever you go outside, you’re forced to layer up and adapt to the temperature. In your own home, however, the story is different. You expect to be comfortable in your house, which is why keeping your HVAC system in optimal condition is always a priority – no matter what time of the year it happens to be.
But when exactly should you seek professional help for your HVAC system? There are some strong indicators that an expert touch is necessary if you want to keep your home comfortable – and here are some of them.
Sudden Spike in Power Bills
If you’ve been running your system for a few months now, then you should have a fairly good idea when something changes in terms of billing. A sudden spike in the cost of power could indicate something’s wrong with your HVAC system. Perhaps it’s drawing too much power, or maybe you unconsciously turn it up because the heating/cooling system isn’t as efficient? In either case, you’d want to have it checked immediately and changed if needed.
Frequent Problems
Have you noticed intermittent problems with your HVAC system? Perhaps you turn it on, and it doesn’t work, but when you try it again later in the same day, it starts working fine. These intermittent problems are a sign that something big is coming – and you don’t want to wait for it. Instead, meet this problem head-on and hire HVAC specialists who can diagnose the intermittent issues before it becomes a big one. You’ll find that it’s much easier to repair the proverbial leak instead of waiting for the pipes to burst.
Loud or Uncommon Noises
Most HVAC systems today operate with an assuring hum or a sound that’s very easy to ignore. Once the sound changes, this is a sign that the system should be looked into. This could mean a problem with the coil or an issue with the duct system. In either case, ignoring the problem will only make the situation worse and may necessitate completely changing the system – especially if the unit is over ten years old. In many cases of newer models, however, this is a simple fix that can give you back your quietly humming background noise.
Little Heating or Cooling Capacity
Do you find yourself having to turn the unit a tad higher because the heating or cooling doesn’t seem to be working? Over time, this can stack up on your power bill – making the unit a burden rather than a source of comfort. Sometimes, the inadequate heating or cooling capacity is due to improper cleaning of the model, which can be easily addressed. In some cases, however, it requires a complete change of the unit to generate better efficiency. In either case, getting specialist help will serve you better in the long run instead of simply ignoring the problem.
Uneven Heating or Cooling
If some rooms seem to be warmer or colder than others, this is a sign that your HVAC system is having a hard time distributing the air all throughout the room. This problem is often due to the system itself if the unit is relatively old. While you may be able to live with the uneven heating and cooling capacity, there’s a simple fix to the problem – replace the unit with a more recent and more efficient model.
In Between Seasons
Some areas use their HVAC units only during particular seasons. If your HVAC has been dormant for most of the year and you intend to start using it as temperature changes, make sure to have it checked first. Dormant units are more likely to deteriorate due to the lack of use – much like how cars fail to start after months of not being driven. Ideally, a checkup should be done right before you’re meant to use it on a daily basis.
Once a Year if Used Continuously
If you use your HVAC unit for most of the year, it’s essential to find some time to have it checked by a professional. The last thing you want to happen is for the unit to have issues in the middle of its usage. Obviously, a frequently used model will get wear and tear, hence the need for periodic maintenance.
Keep in mind, though, that the health of your HVAC system is only as good as the heating and cooling company you hire to fix the problem. This is why it’s important to find quality service providers in your area.
